You finally booked the holiday photos, and now everyone is asking the same question: what are we wearing? Your toddler has opinions, the baby is in a different size range and someone in the family already bought a red sweater. The good news is that you do not need identical outfits to look like one family in a picture.
The easiest approach is to coordinate, not copy. Pick a small color story, give each person a role in it and let comfort make the final call. Coordinated, not identical. Just like your family.
Start with a color story, not an outfit
A color story is two or three colors that show up across the whole group. One color leads, one supports and one is a small accent. Everyone wears something from the story, but no two people need to wear the same piece.
This year, our favorite is a deep, wintry story: navy, gold-toned neutrals and soft gray. It feels dressy in daylight and cozy by the tree.
Here is how that story breaks down, plus two alternates if your family leans another way:
- Our pick, evening glow: navy leads, gold-toned neutrals support and soft gray is the accent.
- Classic holiday: deep red, cream and a touch of green.
- Soft and cozy: oatmeal, sage and warm white.
1. Let the toddler's outfit lead
Toddlers are the hardest people to dress and the most likely to be in the center of the frame. Choose their outfit first, then build the adults around it. If your child loves one specific print, let that print set the colors for everyone else.
Browse Holiday Outfits & Dressy Looks for something a little special, and check the product details for each size you need. For a navy story, the Navy Santa Sleigh Holiday Collection outfit set or a Navy Blue Cotton Button-Down Shirt gives the toddler the lead color, and the Navy Santa Sleigh Christmas Dress works for a sister.
2. Mix one print with plenty of solids
A single print in the group gives the photo personality. More than one busy print can compete with faces. Put the print on one or two kids and keep the adults in solids that pull a color from it.
Siblings can share a print in different styles. A baby zippy and a toddler two-piece set in the same design look connected without being twins. Our sibling pajama guide walks through how to choose pairs for different ages.
3. Plan a pajama set for the cozy shots
Some of the sweetest holiday photos happen at home, on the couch, with a book or a mug of something warm. A pajama session can be shorter and calmer than a dressed-up one. Many families do both: a few dressy frames, then a quick change into pajamas for the relaxed ones.
Take a look at H&B Holiday Pajamas if you want a cozy look in the same color story. For navy, gold and gray, try the Winter Slate Zinza Toddler Two-Piece Pajama Set or the Starlit Evergreens Zinza Toddler Two-Piece Pajama Set, with the matching Winter Slate and Starlit Evergreens convertible zippies for babies.
4. Do a comfort check before photo day
Try every outfit on a few days ahead. Check that your toddler can sit, crawl, climb onto a lap and move their arms. An outfit that pinches or slides will show up in the photos as a frown.
- Check sleeves and waistbands while your child is moving, not standing still.
- Pack a backup top for spills or snacks.
- Bring familiar shoes, or skip shoes for indoor shots.
5. Keep accessories simple
A bow, a hat or one pair of festive socks can tie the look together. Too many extras can be one more thing for a toddler to pull off. Choose one accessory per child and let it go if they are not into it that day.
6. Time the session around your toddler
The best outfit will not save a photo taken during a missed nap. Book the session when your child is usually rested and fed. Dress them last, right before you leave or right before the photographer arrives.
Example: a family of four in navy, gold and gray
Imagine a family choosing navy, gold-toned neutrals and soft gray. The toddler wears a navy button-down, the baby wears a soft gray layer, one parent wears a camel sweater and the other wears a navy knit. Later, both kids change into Winter Slate pajamas for the cozy frames. Nobody matches exactly, yet every frame looks like it belongs together.
